Pharmacy Department - Northampton General Hospital

Training and Development

Student Pharmacy Technicians

At NGH, Student Pharmacy Technicians undertake the NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services. Our Training Plan ensures that the student gains experience working in the Dispensary, Pharmacy Stores, Quality Assurance, Aseptic Services, Drug Information, and in the Pharmacy at a local Psychiatric Unit.

We have five NVQ D32/D33 Assessors based in the department.

Pharmacy Technicians

We are committed to developing the role of Pharmacy Technicians.

Our dispensary-based Technicians have successfully completed training in the ‘final check’ of dispensed medicines, and we have implemented a system of initial validation/final technical check.

We have developed a training programme to enhance our Technician's patient counselling skills, and nearly all our dispensary-based technicians have completed the training program.

We are investigating the role of the Technician in the supply of medicines for individual named patients, and to perform enhanced patient counselling at ward level.

We currently have Technicians involved in a Patient Self-administration Scheme in operation on a medical ward, and we have developed a technical role in the clinical areas of Medicines Information and Formulary work.
